I called ahead to verify that Sushi Tora did have gluten free options. The woman who answered the phone wouldn't say specifically but did assure me that they could do GF dishes. Upon arriving, we found that what I was told on the phone wasn't entirely true. What our waiter didn't know or understand, he certainly made up for with enthusiasm. When asked if they had any gluten free dishes, he responded by saying that the grilled tofu was fine except it was cooked in butter on the grill. I think he thought we meant vegetarian. As it turned out, they pretty much only had tamari and everything that was marinated or had other sauces and had some form of gluten. They were helpful but just didn't have much to work with. The food was tasty though.

There's good news and bad news about Sushi Tora. The good news is that Sushi Tora carries Tamari soy sauce. And although our server initially had a little bit of trouble trying to figure out what we were talking about when we asked about gluten-free options, eventually he was very helpful in trying to figure out what types of sushi I could order. He was willing to go back and forth between us and the sushi chef several times. The bad news is that there aren't a lot of gluten-free options at Sushi Tora. The regular menu is pretty much off limits and even the sushi menu is limited too. Sushi Tora uses imitation crab, which contains wheat, and their unagi (eel) is pre-marinated so you can't order it with the sauce on the side. So that basically leaves you with only nigiri or sashimi or vegetable maki rolls.
